The Foundation For Care

When we talk about animal welfare, it is easy to reduce it to food bowls, vet visits, and a roof over an animal’s head. Those things matter, of course, but they are not the whole story. True welfare is not simply about keeping an animal alive; it is about the quality of the life they are living while they are here with us.

The Five Freedoms are one of the most widely recognised frameworks in animal welfare. Originally developed to guide the care of farm animals, they have since been adopted across all areas of animal care — from rescue work and veterinary practice to home care and professional welfare standards.

They are not rules to memorise or boxes to tick. They are a way of thinking about what animals actually need in order to feel safe, well, comfortable, and able to behave naturally. Each freedom reflects an area where animals are vulnerable if humans do not actively protect their needs.

This is not theory. These freedoms show up in the everyday life of your animal, whether you are aware of them or not.
